The Box

One of the most enlightening things that an artist will learn is that the strongest driving force for creativity is finding a way to subvert the limitations of a given medium. Creativity comes from constraint. After all, how could you think outside of the box if you weren’t in the box to begin with? Something about imposing limitations on your work and challenging yourself to flourish in spite of them drives you to look for shots you might otherwise not see. For me, the most reliable constraints to get the creative juices flowing is the time-honored dynamic duo of B&W and a 1:1 aspect ratio. I have come to call this combo “The Box” and when I feel myself falling into a creative lull in my work, I turn to the box to shake things up.
